The short version
A good AI consultant does three things. They find the work in your business that AI can genuinely take on. They connect AI to the systems you already run so it happens automatically. And they train your people to use it well without you, so the benefit stays after the engagement ends.
That is the whole job. Everything else is either supporting detail or a sales pitch.
What the work looks like day to day
It starts with your operations, not with technology. A consultant worth paying maps how work actually moves through your business: where quotes are written, how jobs get scheduled, who chases the invoices, what reports get built by hand every Friday. Out of that map come the places where hours are quietly lost.
Then the practical part: setting AI up inside the tools you already pay for, whether that is Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Xero or your job management system. The goal is that the work simply happens, in your systems, without your team learning a new platform.
What an AI consultant should not be
- A software vendor in disguise. If the engagement starts with a product demo, you are being sold a platform, not consulted.
- A data science lab. Most small and mid-sized businesses do not need custom models. They need their existing systems connected and used properly.
- A permanent fixture. A good engagement finishes. If the value disappears when the consultant does, nothing was actually built.
Consulting or enablement?
We describe our own work as AI enablement rather than consulting, and the difference matters. Consulting can end at advice: a report, a roadmap, a strategy deck. Enablement ends with AI running in your business, your team trained on it, and everything built handed over to you. Advice is the start of the job, not the deliverable.
How to judge one before you hire
Ask where they will do the work (your systems or theirs), who owns what gets built (it should be you, in writing), and what the first step costs and delivers. We have written up the full list in eight questions to ask before hiring an AI consultant.
If you want to see how we answer them ourselves: our method is public, our first conversation is free, and the costs are shown up front. Start there.
